Care home keeps active with traditional sports day event

With the recent warm weather a Suffolk care home took the opportunity to get active by taking part in a county-wide sports day to help keep the residents keep active and help build new friendships with neighbouring care homes.

Mildenhall Lodge care home travelled to Mills Meadow in Framlingham a long with 10 other teams from Care UK homes to compete in traditional sports day challenges.

Residents and team members from Mildenhall Lodge on St John's Close, took part in a host of events including a sack race, a three-legged race and an egg and spoon race, with the grand finale being a tug of war.

Katy Hughes, home manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: "The annual sports day is always a highlight for us, as not only is it a fun opportunity to compete in light hearted games and events, but it also provides many benefits for residents.

"It offers a valuable opportunity to bring older people in the area together, increase social interaction and reduce feelings of loneliness.

"We're already looking forward to next year."

Teams were also joined by representatives from Suffolk County Council and everyone took part in a World Cup-style penalty shootout.

Residents built up an appetite after a busy morning of fun games and were treated to a barbecue prepared by the home's chefs. The day was rounded off as teams took part in an Olympic-style awards ceremony to crown the winners, Hartismere Place.

Marie Reeve, home manager at Mills Meadow, said: "The Suffolk sports day is always a highlight for residents and care teams alike, and we were delighted to host this fantastic event once again.

"We are fortunate to be part of a strong care home community here in Suffolk, and days like today are a brilliant opportunity to bring everyone together for a day of fun, laughter and to celebrate the year's achievements.

"This year's event did not disappoint, it was wonderful to bring everyone together and see the residents and care teams working together and making new friendships."
