Child abuse video that went viral could change Uganda laws

22-year-old nanny, Jolly Tumuhirwe, from Uganda, who has made headlines worldwide, is facing an attempted murder charge and possible life improsonement over her abuse on a two-year-old girl.

A horrific video went viral on social networks and the maid is shown hitting the toddler, throwing her to the floor when she is sick, standing on her with her full weight and then kicking her across a room.

The girl's mother told the Daily Monitor: 'We took her to the hospital for medical check up and she is okay. We will be returning to the hospital next week.'

Tumuhirwe is remanded in custody and will appear in court on December 8.

Uganda's Youth and Children Affairs minister Ronald Kibuule paid the family a visit and condemned the maid's actions.



He said the video has opened the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development's eyes. "We are going to design a legal and policy frame work to regulate maids and other domestic staff because they are unprofessional.

"We want to put in place basic professional requirements so that companies that recruit maids are registered and maids who are exploited and abused by their bosses too have protection," he said.
